I am sitting in my hotel room trying to digest the first day of the Institute that this year is happening in Wiesbaden in Germany. I have to admit that I was dreading this professional development a little, hosted by none other that the two CBCI gurus, Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning mainly because I was exhausted at the end of a tough academic year and couldn't envisage dealing with complex learning with mush for a brain, but also because we are being assessed on our understanding through a 1 hour exam and a 20 minute presentation at the end of the week. If I pass, I can then go on to train other teachers on CBCI which I think is extremely valuable, not only to the teachers I will train but to me, as my knowledge of CBCI will deepen further.
I like being challenged. I like it when my thinking and perspective are challenged because it allows me to question things and go deeper into my understanding, and I know that this is exactly what will happen this week. I will try to jot down my confirmations and realisations as I go through the week but the take home message for me is that the PYP is a good start in the need to develop more concept based instruction, however there are gaps and areas for improvement. It is a start but it's not enough.
